January 28 - February 1

This week we took school on the road for our Disneyland trip!  We still got in plenty of schoolwork with four days of driving and travel trays for the kids to use in the car.

MATH

Preston:
Preston completed math assignments.  He worked on multi-digit addition and subtraction problems.  He also practiced math facts with addition and subtraction wrap-ups.

Marissa:
Marissa completed several math assignments this week.  She reviewed addition and subtraction problems and practiced time, money and shapes.  She also practiced math facts with addition and subtraction wrap-ups.

Caleb:
Caleb worked on counting and simple addition.  He read through a couple of his numbers books.  He also practiced forming numbers with the wiki stiks we purchased to play with in the car.

LANGUAGE ARTS

Preston:
Preston worked on spelling lists and poetry memorization in the car.  He also read Frog and Toad and Magic Treehouse books.  In addition to this, Preston listened to our read-aloud book in the car.  We listened to Tale of Despereaux.  It was excellent!

Marissa:
Marissa worked on spelling lists and poetry memorization in the car.  She read Dick and Jane books and a couple Dr. Seus books we brought with us.  She also listened to Tale of Despereaux for extra language arts in the car this week.

Caleb:
Caleb formed letters with wiki stiks in the car.  He also listened to Tale of Despereaux.

HISTORY (WORLD GEOGRAPHY)

Preston, Marissa & Caleb:
We read "I am Walt Disney" to prepare for our trip to Disneyland.  It was so much fun learning about the life of Walt Disney.  We also read facts and did a scavenger hunt to learn more about the history of Disneyland.

While we were in Disneyland, we discussed some of the countries that we have learned about in World Geography that were represented in the "It's a Small World" ride.  Marissa thought it was adorable.  Preston was a little creeped out by the "dolls."  But it was a good learning experience.

We also had the opportunity to go to the beach.  It was the first trip for Marissa and Caleb and Preston hasn't been since he was a toddler so he had no recollection of it.  The kids were fascinated by the waves and tide and spent time collecting seaweed and seashells that they found along the beach.  Dylan (our older brother) spent some time talking to Preston about how the moon affects the ocean.  I didn't realize it until Preston brought it up, but we took the opportunity to look it up at home when it came up in conversation.

TECH (BUILDING & ENGINEERING)

Preston:
We used wiki stiks to create in the car.  Preston created a pretzel, a little guy and a house.  He also built a cool sand castle at the beach.  He realized quickly how important it is to have the correct consistency of sand in order for the sand castle to come together correctly.

Marissa:
Marissa LOVED the wiki sticks.  She made a house, glasses, a full "costume" and several other creations I cannot remember now.

Caleb:
Caleb used the wiki sticks to complete number and letter assignments he had to help him with fine motor skills.  He also decided to create a bracelet after he worked on assignments.

OPTIONAL (PE)

Preston, Marissa & Caleb
This week the kids swam at the hotel and in the ocean.  We also hiked during the days we were staying in St. George with great grandma.

OTHER

Preston, Marissa & Caleb
We had fun drawing Disney characters too.  Marissa was especially excited about learning to draw characters and completed several to share with friends and family.  Preston worked really hard to get "Stitch" just perfect!  :)
