WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS
PRESTON
Preston read "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" by L. Frank Baum. He wanted to read it because he never has in the past and he enjoys comparing books to movies. He said it was much better than he thought it would be. He had a good time comparing the characters in the play and discussing how every person needs each of the character traits that the characters were seeking in the book. He also wanted to read the book because we will be attending the broadway play of "The Wizard of Oz" at Tuacahn the first week in June. We are so excited and cannot wait!
MARISSA
Marissa read "The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate" for her Georgics class this week. She really enjoyed the book, especially the relationship Calpurnia develops with her grandfather who becomes her mentor as a naturalist. She also loves that Calpurnia doesn't like very many domestic things. Even though Marissa loves sewing and sometimes enjoys cooking, she can relate to feeling like she is supposed to do certain things and discouraged from doing others. She found Calpurnia to be a very relatable character.
In the book, Calpurnia enters her tatting lace in the state fair and she gets 3rd place (because there were only three entries). She didn't know what tatting was so she did a little research and learned the basics of tatting from some online tutorials.
CALEB
Caleb read chapters 39-42 in "The Story of the World, volume 4" in preparation for his Ninja Scholars class. This covered the years 1980-2000 in modern history. He enjoyed learning about this time period and really enjoyed taking the online quiz to see how much he understood. He could not believe that he got 100% on the quiz! He is excited to be finished with his history studies for this school year so he can do some research on subjects he is interested in studying more in depth.
