December 17 - January 4

MATH

Preston:
Preston completed two assignments in his math book this week.  We played several math games to supplement the days of bookwork we completed including Monopoly and a new game we received for Christmas called Protect Your Assets.  Preston also worked on math facts.

Marissa:
Marissa completed two assignments in her math book.  She also played math games with the family and helped Caleb with his Inchimals math game.  She is working on learning multiplication in her head even though she is not to multiplication in her math book yet.  It is fun to see how excited she is to grasp the concept.

Caleb:
Caleb worked on adding and subtracting with Inchimals.  He also worked on writing numbers since fine motor skills are difficult for him right now.  He is really quick at adding and subtracting small numbers in his head and often shouts out an answer when his older siblings are trying to work through a problem and he hears them talking through it.

LANGUAGE ARTS

Preston:
Preston completed two assignments in his language arts book this week.  We also finished reading Caddie Woodlawn as a family.  Over the Christmas break, we read a book called Christmas Jars.  Preston worked on reading aloud with lots of books about trees and snowmen.

Marissa:
Marissa completed two assignments in her language arts book this week.  We finished reading Caddie Woodlawn as a family.  Marissa informed me that she is ready to read more book in the Little House on the Prairie instead of branching out.  I guess she missed that.  Marissa worked a lot on out loud reading over the break.  She read a lot of easy readers about snowmen, penguins and other winter-related books.

Caleb:
Caleb practiced writing letters this week.  He participated in lots of reading over the break with mom and his siblings.

HISTORY (WORLD GEOGRAPHY)

Preston, Marissa & Caleb:
We talked about different holidays in December and different religions.  We watched a YouTube video about the way different countries celebrate Christmas.  We also read a book about Christmas in Canada as we finished up our North America studies.

TECH (BUILDING & ENGINEERING)

Preston:
Preston built many things the past three weeks.  One thing he worked on was building a big ginger bread house out of graham crackers.  He realized just how difficult it was to build a bigger house using only icing, but had a lot of fun and ate lots of candy in the process.  He also built several little Lego sets he received for Christmas.

Marissa:
Marissa built a ginger bread house over the break.  She also created snowflakes and several other winter-related building and crafting projects.

Caleb:
Caleb also built a ginger bread house over the break for class.  He loved it and almost put as much candies on his house to decorate it as he put in his mouth.  ;)  He also assembled a cool wind-up clock he received from his aunt for Christmas (with help from mom and Marissa).

OPTIONAL (PE)

Preston:
Preston attended his karate class.  We have to move to a different studio so he won't be able to attend on Thursday, but will have an opportunity to attend an extra class they offer on Saturdays.   He also spent a lot of time swimming over the break.

Marissa:
Marissa attended her tumbling class this week.  She continues to practice her back tuck and back whip with a spotter unless she is on a trampoline.  She also went swimming several times.

Caleb:
Caleb attended his karate class this week.  His class is also moving locations, but we are looking forward to a new class and new students to get to know.  He also spent a lot of time swimming over the Christmas break and managed to fit in time on his bike and scooter when the snow melted.

I'm not sure what they were attempted tying their scooters together but I'm happy to report no one was hurt in the process.
